On Monday, July 18, 2005, the Committee on Ethical Considerations for Revisions to DHHS Regulations for Protection of Prisoners Involved in Research held a workshop/public session at the Gladstone Institutes in San Francisco, CA.
The workshop reviewed issues related to the conduct of research in correctional settings. Five panel sessions reviewed research on the following topics:
- federal perspectives on research needs;
- methodological challenges with conducting research in correctional settings (especially for HIV/AIDS, TB, and substance abuse);
- considerations for "special" populations (e.g., juveniles, women prisoners, children with incarcerated parents);
- issues related to human subjects review of research with correctional populations; and
- experiences of former prisoners involved in research.
This was the third of five meetings that the committee held to collect information and conduct their deliberations.
