Many students rely on federally reimbursable school meals for the bulk of their nutritional needs, so the food their schools provide is important. In February 2010, food service companies ARAMARK, Sodexo, and Chartwells, who provide students with breakfasts and lunches at schools across the U.S., announced they would meet the IOM's recommended school meal standards for fat, sugar, whole grains, and sodium. All three companies also have agreed to include more fruit, vegetables, and low-fat and fat-free milk in their school meals. These standards come from the IOM's 2009 report School Meals: Building Blocks for Healthy Children, which recommended more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains; less saturated fat and sodium; and minimum and maximum calorie levels for reimbursable school meals.
