American Cancer Society Kicks Off "Stay Quit Monday"
Released: 12/1/2008
The American Cancer Society’s initiative "Stay Quit Monday" aims to encourage smokers to make a commitment to kick the habit. The initiative began November 24, 2008, and centers on the idea of using each Monday as a day for quitters to reaffirm their smoke cessation goal and stay on track, allowing them to make progress from Monday to Monday, rather than the more daunting commitment of "today until forever." This initiative is in line with the recommendations of the IOM’s 2007 report Ending the Tobacco Problem: A Blueprint for the Nation, which noted "motivating more quit attempts among people who now make none, and more frequent quit attempts among those who now try to quit" as one of five requirements to achieve higher cessation rates.
