The Wellness Community to Establish Cancer Survivorship Research and Training Institute

Released: 11/3/2008

During a meeting in October 2008, The Wellness Community (TWC), a nonprofit organization providing cancer support, announced it would establish a Cancer Survivorship Research & Training Institute in Philadelphia. The new Institute will conduct research, sponsor patient and caregiver forums, and direct training programs for health care professionals, all aimed at providing social and emotional support for people affected by cancer. In explaining the need for this type of Institute, TWC referenced the Institute of Medicine’s November 2007 report Cancer Care for the Whole Patient: Meeting Psychosocial Health Needs, which found that attending to the psychosocial needs of patients should be an integral part of quality cancer care.
