Advancing Quality Improvement Research: Challenges and Opportunities is a summary of a workshop held by the Institute of Medicine's Forum on the Science of Health Care Quality Improvement and Implementation. The focus of the workshop was to bring people together from various arenas to discuss quality improvement-what it is, what barriers against it must be overcome in the health care industry, and what research has been done on it.
Although there is a broader scope of issues pertaining to this subject, the summary is limited to the presentations and discussions during the workshop itself.

The Institute of Medicine’s Forum on the Science of Health Care Quality Improvement and Implementation convened a workshop in Washington, D.C. entitled, Creating a Business Case for Quality Improvement and Quality Improvement Research. The overall goal of the workshop was to develop a better understanding of the economic and business disciplines that encourage sustained efforts to improve the quality of health care.

These questions are addressed in The State of Quality Improvement and Implementation Research: Expert Views, Workshop Summary by the Institute of Medicine. The IOM Forum on the Science of Health Care Quality Improvement and Implementation invited experts both from within and outside of health care to provide a better understanding of what is known about quality improvement and implementation research.
