Nominations Open for the 2010 Lienhard Award and Sarnat Prize
The IOM is now accepting nominations for the Gustav O. Lienhard Award and the Rhoda and Bernard Sarnat International Prize in Mental Health. The Lienhard Award recognizes individuals for outstanding achievement in improving health care services in the United States. The Sarnat Prize recognizes individuals, groups, or organizations for outstanding achievement in improving mental health. Nominations will be accepted through May 7, 2010.

IOM Reports Provide Science-Based Foundation for Efforts to Curb Childhood Obesity
The IOM has provided the evidence for steps and strategies that can work to reduce the nation's rate of childhood obesity in a series of reports reviewing various facets of obesity prevention. The IOM's study results underscore that preventing childhood obesity requires a multifaceted effort that involves multiple responsible parties -- health care providers, parents, schools, local, state, and federal government officials, and the food and beverage industries -- working in concert to be successful.

Actions Taken
School Meal Providers Pledge to Meet IOM Nutrition Standards
In February 2010, food service companies ARAMARK, Sodexo, and Chartwells, who provide students with breakfasts and lunches at schools across the U.S., announced they would meet the IOM's recommended school meal standards for fat, sugar, whole grains, and sodium.

IOM Report Declares High Blood Pressure a Neglected Disease, Calls for Strategies to Change Americans' Lifestyles and Diets to Curb Hypertension

Public health officials and health care providers need to step up their efforts to reduce Americans' increasing rates of high blood pressure and better treat those with the condition, which triggers more than one-third of heart attacks and almost half of heart failures in the United States each year, says a new report from the IOM.

Disaster Experts Available to Respond to Health Inquiries From Officials Leading Relief and Recovery Efforts in Haiti

IOM Report Recommends Steps to Reduce Threats Posed by Hepatitis B and C, Which Disproportionately Affect Minorities

Stepped-up vaccination requirements, a boost in resources for prevention and treatment, and a public awareness campaign similar to the effort that dispelled the stigma of HIV/AIDS are needed to curb the health threats posed by hepatitis B and hepatitis C, says a new report from the Institute of Medicine.

Door Opens to Health Claims Tied to Agent Orange
As a result of the IOM's report Veterans and Agent Orange: Update 2008, Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki announced in October plans to add Parkinson's disease, ischemic heart disease and hairy-cell leukemia list of conditions presumed to have been caused by Agent Orange.
