The IOM was chartered in 1970 as a component of the National Academy of Sciences, a private corporation established by federal charter, which was created by an Act of Congress signed into law in 1863 by President Abraham Lincoln. The Institute is recognized as an international resource of independence, judgment, and veracity in the analysis of health problems that center on policy decisions. The IOM is committed to the advancement of the health sciences and education and to the improvement of the health and well-being of the peoples of the United States and the world. In 2000, IOM celebrates its 30th Anniversary.
