The Committee on Enhancing Federal Healthcare Quality Programs has released its report, which is entitled: Leadership by Example: Coordinating Government Roles in Improving Health Care Quality.  The purpose of this study was to re-examine the various federal quality improvement and oversight programs to assess whether changes are needed to:
  • Provide adequate protection to beneficiaries.
  • Provide strong incentives to providers to improve quality.
  • Improve the efficiency of the oversight processes by reducing redundancy.

A public briefing was held Wednesday, October 30, 2002 at the National Academies building, 2101 C Street, NW, Washington, D.C.  The meeting began with a brief presentation on the report, and then the session was opened for audience questions. Participants included the study chair, Gilbert Omenn, M.D., Ph.D., Professor of Medicine, Genetics and Public Health, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and Elizabeth A. McGlynn, Ph.D., Associate Director, RAND Health, Santa Monica, CA.
