The Future of Emergency Care: Subcommittee on Hospital-Based Emergency Care

More Information Print   Email

The Hospital-Based Emergency Care Subcommittee will identify and address a wide range of issues, including: the role and impact of the emergency department within the larger hospital system; the interaction between the emergency department and inpatient and ancillary services, such as lab, pharmacy, and imaging; patient flow and information technology; workforce issues across multiple disciplines, including emergency physicians, nurses, and other members of the care team; the impact of technological innovations on emergency care; the legal and regulatory framework for emergency care, including EMTALA, liability issues, and reimbursement; disaster preparedness, surge capacity, and surveillance; clinical and health services research within the emergency department setting; and special challenges of emergency care in rural settings.

The scope of this IOM project reflects a recent expansion through funding from additional federal sponsors. More information on the overall project can be found on the project description page.  This expansion includes the addition of members to the main committee, as well as the creation of three subcommittees: Pediatric Emergency Care Subcommittee, Prehospital EMS Subcommittee, and Hospital-based Emergency Care Subcommittee.  Three reports will be issued focusing on the subcommittee topic areas, and a fourth will be issued looking at the broad system issues, as well as linkages among the areas addressed by the subcommittees. The committee's reports are expected to be released in early 2006.

The Hospital-Based Emergency Care Subcommittee will meet a total of 4 times:
            June 24-25, 2004
            October 4-5, 2004
            March 2-3, 2005
            June 23-24, 2005
