The National Cancer Policy Board released its report, Interpreting the Volume-Outcome Relationship in the Context of Cancer Care in July 2001.  In their 1999 report, Ensuring Quality Cancer Care, the Board recommended that patients undergoing procedures that are technically difficult to perform and have been associated with higher mortality in lower-volume settings receive care at facilities with extensive experience. This follow-up White Paper provides further recommendations regarding implementation and research. A systematic review of the literature on the volume-outcome relationship for cancer surgery is included as an appendix.
