Large-Scale Science and Cancer Research
With the recent completion of the human genome project, interest in undertaking similar large-scale collaborative projects has grown in the biomedical sciences. But this recent interest in big science projects raises many questions as to how such projects should be funded, organized, managed, and staffed. The goals of this study are to:
- define the concept of "big science" with a special focus on application to cancer research examine the current state of big science in biomedical research (what is being done, how effectively is it being done, and how is the field adapting)
- define the circumstances in which big science projects could best advance cancer research
- examine other potential models of big science
- identify obstacles to the implementation of big science projects in cancer research, and provide policy recommendations for improving the process for undertaking big science projects in cancer research
