Title: Cohort R46: Mortality Patterns in Veterans with Psychiatric Diagnoses in WWII

Summary: This cohort consists of 9,814 white males born in the years 1914-1918, who served in World War II but were released with a diagnosis of psychoneurosis. The classification of psychoneurosis used in 1944 includes eight categories of illness: hysteria, anxiety, neurasthenia, neurocirculatory neurasthenia, obsessive compulsive disorder, mixed psychoneuroses, reaction depression, and finally, other and unspecified psychoneuroses. A comparison group of 9,942 age, race, and service-matched individuals is included.
