Cohort CVMP175: Cold Injury Print   Email

Title:
Cohort CVMP175: Cold Injury

Summary:
A cohort of approximately 4,700 veterans suffering from the effects of cold injuries incurred during the last two years of World War II. Initial lists of diagnoses originated with the Office of the Army Surgeon General. The cohort is divided into three groups by severity of injury/degree of impairment: severe; moderate; mild. Veterans with injuries defined as severe experienced sympathectomy, gangrene, amputation, or other serious consequences. Veterans with injuries defined as moderate received complete disability discharges (CDDs), yet were not injured badly enough to be considered severe. Veterans with injuries defined as moderate did not receive a CDD. These groups were subsequently examined in 6 VA centers across the country. A subset of 400 veterans were interviewed extensively, providing more clinical and exposure information.
