The Food and Nutrition Board's (FNB's) Subcommittee on the Interpretation and Uses of Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs) conducted a study on the interpretation and uses of DRIs as a component of the Scientific Evaluation of Dietary Reference Intakes study.
This study expands upon the interpretation of the new terms and concepts that are integral to the overall DRI project.
The first phase of the study is focused on the development of a model or processes to aid in the statistical interpretation necessary for assessing the adequacy of population intakes.
The second phase of the study involved the development of guidance, where appropriate, for
- the application of DRIs for specific purposes;
- the adjustments to be made for potential errors (e.g., over- and under-reporting ) in dietary intake data and assumptions regarding nutrient databases, and
- the handling of data that are non-normally distributed.
The subcommittee reviewed population uses of DRIs, recommending methods for assessing population intakes, and providing guidance on the other uses of DRIs in relation to nutrition education and planning intakes for groups and individuals.
