Nervous System Disorders in Developing Countries

The study reviewed the overall burden of disease caused by a range of disorders. It focused on the following disorders to identify strategies for prevention, low-cost treatment, priorities for research and development, and for capacity building to meet the needs of developing countries:
  • unipolar and bipolar depression
  • schizophrenia
  • epilepsy
  • stroke
  • developmental disabilities

This study included the following specific objectives:

  • Review current global knowledge about the causes, prevention and treatment of nervous system disorders
  • Review current global knowledge about factors that influence appropriate health care for individuals with nervous system disorders
  • Identify research gaps and capacity building needs that need to be addressed to improve global understanding of nervous system disorders
  • Identify cost-effective opportunities for prevention, diagnosis, and treatment
  • Recommend cost-effective public and private, institutional and global efforts needed to reduce the occurrence of nervous system disorders and improve the capabilities of those with disorders
