The study reviewed the overall burden of disease caused by a range of disorders. It focused on the following disorders to identify strategies for prevention, low-cost treatment, priorities for research and development, and for capacity building to meet the needs of developing countries:

unipolar and bipolar depression
schizophrenia
epilepsy
stroke
developmental disabilities

This study included the following specific objectives:

Review current global knowledge about the causes, prevention and treatment of nervous system disorders
Review current global knowledge about factors that influence appropriate health care for individuals with nervous system disorders
Identify research gaps and capacity building needs that need to be addressed to improve global understanding of nervous system disorders
Identify cost-effective opportunities for prevention, diagnosis, and treatment
Recommend cost-effective public and private, institutional and global efforts needed to reduce the occurrence of nervous system disorders and improve the capabilities of those with disorders
