Workshop. The Impact of Globalization on Infectious Disease Emergence and Control

Event Date: April 16, 2002 - April 17, 2002

Print   Email
A workshop on the influence of globalization on the emergence and control of infectious diseases was conducted by the Forum on Emerging Infections. Through invited presentations and participant discussion, the Forum workshop explored the impact of increasingly integrated trade, economic development, global technology transfer, and cultural exchange on the patterns of disease emergence.

The workshop also examined the scientific evidence supporting current and potential strategies that seek to exploit the opportunities presented by globalization and to counter the detrimental effects that often concurrently arise. The methods and measures of a response for industry, federal regulation, domestic and international public health, federal and academic research, non-governmental organizations, and the private healthcare sector will be considered.

The summary of this workshop, The Impact of Globalization on Infectious Disease Emergence and Control: Exploring the Consequences and Opportunities, was released in March 2006.
