The Economics of Antimalarials

More Information Print   Email

Malaria remains the leading killer of children in Africa and a significant cause of morbidity among adults and children in Africa, Asia, and focally, in other parts of the world. Resistance to inexpensive antimalarial drugs is widespread, and few effective drugs--even expensive ones--exist to fill the current need, which is growing.

The committee examined evolving patterns of malaria (including drug resistance) and the options for controlling it, with the aim of developing policy strategies, particularly financing strategies, that could lead to the greatest good for those most affected, as well as for the larger population at risk. The potential for incremental improvement of existing new antimalarials through pharmaceutical technology was also explored.
