Experts from Africa, Europe, the Caribbean and Mexico will make over 25 presentations to the IOM committee charged with developing conclusions and recommendations for the government and other interested organizations. The presentations will highlight the unprecedented opportunities made possible by efforts such as those of the Global Fund to fight AIDS, TB, and Malaria and the U.S. Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief. The World Health Organization’s ambitious 3 x 5 plan will serve as an important backdrop to the discussions.
Lessons learned from established treatment programs will be shared to increase understanding on how to minimize the costly emergence of drug resistance and toxicity. A range of clinical and program management issues will be explored as the foundation for recommending a sound path forward that balances the critical need for rapidly placing millions of people under treatment with appropriate ethical imperatives to ensure that individuals and communities are served in the best manner possible.
