Incorporating Research into Psychiatry Residency Training

More Information Print   Email

Concerns about the declining numbers of physician scientists have existed for several decades. For psychiatry, the decreasing number of physician scientists is especially problematic. In addition to the common concerns about personal economic disincentives and long-duration of training, psychiatry residents face limitations in the availability of research training programs. An analysis of the obstacles, scrutiny of the programs that have successfully incorporated research, and a review of the requirements for Psychiatry residents are likely to provide options for overcoming the obstacles.

An Institute of Medicine (IOM) committee will provide strategies that permit research experience and/or more intensive research training tracks while meeting the requirements for clinical competency in Adult and Child Psychiatry.
