Clinical Research Involving Children: Statement of Citizens for Responsible Care and Research

Summary excerpt from the Statement of Citizens for Responsible Care and Research: CIRCARE has and continues to support research with human subjects. However, conducting experiments on human subjects must be performed ethically and with strong safeguards. The two goals are not mutually exclusive but rather rudimentary in the protection of human rights of subjects and society. The protections for human subjects that our organization advocates are in part the result of past unethical practices that CIRCARE is proud to have exposed in the past twelve years. While I would like to look to the future, the current system of protections for children in research is inadequate and outdated. The perceived lack of protection of children in research stems from the gross inadequacy of the system for any human subjects research. Therefore, reform must occur in the system as a whole. Reforming the system for children in research without concomitant reforms in the system as a whole will leave children/subjects vulnerable to abuse and risks of harm.
