Forum on Drug Discovery, Development, and Translation

Print   Email

NEW:

The Institute of Medicine (IOM) Forum on Drug Discovery, Development, and Translation (the Forum) provides a unique opportunity for stakeholders to meet and discuss issues of mutual interest in a neutral setting.  It includes leaders from private sector sponsors of biomedical and clinical research; federal agencies sponsoring and regulating biomedical and clinical research; foundations; the academic community; consumers; and federal and private health plans.  The Forum explores approaches to increasing the number, quality, and value of new drugs by making the drug development process faster, safer, more efficient, and more focused on the needs of patients.  The range of issues the Forum addresses includes the full drug development pipeline—from drug discovery and regulatory approval to translation of research into clinical practice.

The Forum conducts public workshops to examine issues in drug development.  Past workshops have addressed the roles of consumers and providers in adverse drug event reporting, the benefits and risks of pharmaceuticals, and pediatric drug development.  Workshops slated for 2007 include topics such as: resource requirements for effectively regulating drug safety; managing conflicts of interest in drug research; streamlining intellectual property right negotiations; regulation of follow-on biologics; and development of drugs for neglected diseases.
