March 4 - 5, 2008. Committee Meeting on Optimizing Graduate Medical Trainee (Resident) Hours and Work Schedules (Board on Health Care Services). A two-day Committee Meeting to Improve Patient Safety was held at the Beckman Center at the University of California, Irvine and featured an afternoon workshop open to the public that included several panelists and speakers. An agenda and registration is posted on the project’s website.

March 31, 2008. Workshop on Knowing What Works in Health Care: A Roadmap for the Nation (Board on Health Care Services). A one-day IOM workshop on the recently released report, Knowing What Works in Health Care: A Roadmap for the Nation, was held at the Keck Center of the National Academies and included a series of presentations and panel discussions on the report’s findings and recommendations. In addition to receiving an overview of the report findings, participants addressed the potential synergies between the report’s recommendations and other efforts to promote the use of evidence in health care; the challenges raised by the report’s call for standardizing systematic reviews; various issues related to developing and implementing standards in guideline development; and the challenge of managing conflict of interest in clinical recommendations and practice guidelines. April 1 - 2, 2008. Roundtable Meeting on Translating Genomic-Based Research for Health (Board on Health Sciences Policy). The third meeting of the Roundtable on Translating Genomic-Based Research for Health Board on Health Sciences Policy was held at the Keck Building of the National Academies. Members identified commonalities and differences among the four cases of translation pathways presented at the meeting and developed ideas for how to use this information. The meeting agendais available online. April 21, 2008. Science at FDA: Challenges and Opportunities by the Forum on Drug Discovery, Development, and Translation (Board on Health Science Policy).  The fourth meeting in the Drug Forum’s Biomedical Science & Policy Luncheon Series featured speakers discussing scientific opportunities and regulatory challenges for the FDA in the areas of genomics, nanotechnology, IT, medical devices/regenerative medicine, and food safety. May 12, 2008. Workshop on Toward Health Equality and Patient-Centeredness: Integrating Health Literacy, Disparities Reduction, and Quality Improvement of the Forum on the Science of Health Care Quality Improvement and Implementation (Board on Health Care Services). In collaboration with the Roundtable on Health Disparities and the Roundtable on Health Literacy, the Forum on Health Care Quality will hold its fourth public workshop in Newport Beach, California. You may register online for this free event through May 6, 2008. 

May 21 - 23, 2008. Committee on Conflict of Interest in Medical Research, Education, and Practice Committee Meeting (Board on Health Sciences Policy). The fourth meeting of the IOM Committee on Conflict of Interest in Medical Research, Education, and Practice will be held at the Keck Center of the National Academies. June 23 - 24, 2008. Workshop on New Funding Approaches for Drug Development of the Forum on Drug Discovery, Development, and Translation (Board on Health Science Policy). The Forum will hold a public workshop to discuss innovative models for funding and advancing development of drugs. Speakers and participants at the workshop will outline changes in the translational research process that have taken place over the past ten years; discuss new models for funding translational research and new technologies; and examine regulatory, legislative, and institutional policy tools currently in place to help advance therapeutic development for rare or neglected diseases.
