Evidence Communication-IC Print   Email

The Evidence Communication Innovation Collaborative is focused on establishing more effective communication between patients and providers. Participants with relevant expertise will collaborate on a project that aims to improve the public's understanding of evidence-based medicine, support medical care that utilizes the best evidence, and encourage policies and incentives that will help reflect more effective care. Details on the approach and timetable can be found below in the attached document.

Issue:
The impact of the Roundtable on Evidence-Based Medicine’s work to help transform how evidence on clinical effectiveness is generated and used to improve health and health care depends in part on improvements in our ability to better communicate the importance of evidence to health care consumers.

The IOM Evidence Communication Innovation Collaborative aims to address the demand function for evidence by improving:

  • the public understanding of evidence-based medicine
  • the dynamic nature of the evidence development process
  • importance of supporting progress toward medical care that reflects the best evidence.

The IOM Roundtable membership contains the senior leadership of organizations that have the communications and marketing expertise that can be engaged in the development and execution of this project.

Project:
To engage Roundtable participants and others in the development and implementation of a strategy that involves multiple organizations in work to foster better communication between patients and providers on what the evidence says about the care most appropriate to the circumstance. The outcomes sought include:

  • better understanding among providers, patients, and policy makers on the nature of the evidence supporting the care delivered
  • stronger demand for better evidence to guide health care decisions
  • more focused attention on policies and incentives that can foster the development and use of the information needed for more effective care.
