The Board on Children, Youth, and Families (BCYF) of the National Research Council and the Institute of Medicine will host a seminar on Adolescent Susceptibility to Substance Abuse: Neural and Social Underpinnings of Reward Behaviors on November 12, 2007. The seminar is part of the fall BCYF meeting and represents the Board’s interests in exploring how interdisciplinary approaches to the science of adolescence can contribute to future research, policy, and practice in selected areas of adolescent health and development. The seminar is supported with funds provided by the National Institute for Child Health and Human Development.
The seminar has been organized by BCYF members Laurence Steinberg, Temple University, and Charles Nelson, Harvard University. Speakers in the morning session will present recent research on neurodevelopmental studies of reward processing, impulsivity, emotional regulation, and puberty in adolescents, including both animal and human studies. Afternoon speakers will include respondents who will explore how the biological studies might inform, and be informed by, theory building, experimental studies, and measurement in social and behavioral research areas such as peer influences, family processes, and other interactions with the social environment.
The seminar is open to the public. The meeting will be held from 9 am to 3 pm in Room 100 at The Keck Center of The National Academies (500 Fifth Street, NW, Washington, DC). Limited parking is available from the 6th street entrance to the Keck Center. The site is also accessible by Metro (Judiciary Square or Gallery Place stations).
The agenda is available online. Interested participants are encouraged to pre-register since space is limited. You can register online to be added to the workshop attendance list at http://www8.nationalacademies.org/isc-registration/public/default.asp?event=77A9BDC8.
