On October 7, 2008 the Institute of Medicine hosted a one-day symposium entitled, " The Health Care Workforce for Older Americans: Promoting Team Care." The symposium, held in Los Angeles, profiled innovative models of interdisciplinary team care, key implementation challenges, and efforts to promote further adoption.
Panel discussions featured innovative programs including Collaborative Care for Alzheimer's Disease, Guided Care, Virtually Integrated Practice, and the Green House model. The practical challenges involved in promoting collaboration and teamwork among a diverse set of health care providers - including leadership, communication, and conflict resolution - were discussed, along with solutions that are now being developed and implemented in various parts of the country. Panelists highlighted issues such as lack of workforce training for team care, as well as the obstacles presented by fee-for-service payment structures.
The symposium reflected on specific recommendations of the IOM's Committee on the Future Health Care Workforce for Older Americans which called for improving the delivery of care to older adults. The committee's report, Retooling for an Aging America: Building the Health Care Workforce, was released in April 2008.
