Gulf War and Health: Review of the Medical Literature Relative to Gulf War Veterans' Health

Type:
Consensus Study
Topic(s):
Veterans Health
Board(s):
Board on Population Health and Public Health Practice

Activity Description

In 1998, the IOM began a series of congressionally-mandated studies to examine the scientific and medical literature on the potential health effects of chemical and biological agents related to the 1991 Gulf War.

An IOM committee reviewed, evaluated, and summarized the peer-reviewed medical literature to determine what this information taken together can tell us about the health status of Gulf War veterans. In particular, this review will help inform the Department of Veterans Affairs of deployment-related illnesses among Gulf War veterans that might not be fully appreciated.
