The first meeting of the Committee on Methodological Challenges in HIV Prevention Trials was held on February 6th and 7th, 2007 in the Keck Center of the National Academies, located at 500 Fifth Street, NW in Washington, DC. This was the first of a series of Committee meetings.

The meeting included presentations by principal investigators and statisticians responsible for late-stage efficacy and effectiveness trials of microbicides and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). At subsequent committee meetings, we will hear from experts working on other HIV prevention trials. The next public Committee meeting is tentatively scheduled for April 19, 2007, in London, England.

A final report will be issued in November 2007. The report will focus on recommendations to address methodological challenges, design issues, and novel approaches in HIV prevention trials broadly.
