Activity Description
An IOM committee will plan and convene a workshop to assess the currently published literature and other publicly available documentation from recent trials and policy analyses of Intermittent Preventive Treatment of Malaria in Infants (IPTi).
- The committee will review trial methods and analyses, and formulate consensus conclusions as to the advisability of pursuing IPTi with sulfadoxime-pyrimethamine (SP) based on six studies conducted over the last decade or with alternative drugs more recently studied.
- If warranted, the committee will offer recommendations with respect to further trials and operational research that should be pursued prior to considering large scale implementation.
- The committee will consider issues of drug safety and resistance, dosage regimens and collateral effects on other childhood health care programs (e.g., immunization), cost-effectiveness and program management issues.
- The conclusions and recommendations of the committee will rely upon currently available study reports provided by the IPTi Consortium and will be presented in a letter in the form of a letter report. As time and resources do not allow independent audit of trial conduct, data management, or analyses, the committee will assume for the studies presented that data collection and management was consistent with quality practices and that presented analyses have been performed correctly. The committee will not commission further, independent analyses of original data or cost-effectiveness.
