Activity Description

The Institute of Medicine conducted a study to examine issues surrounding organ donation and to evaluate the ethical implications of proposals to increase organ donation. The committee's report, Organ Donation: Opportunities for Action, was released on May 2, 2006.

The committee examined a broad range of proposals to increase organ donation. The committee identified ethical implications of the proposals; evaluated their impact on donation efforts, public perception, and, especially, on disadvantaged or disproportionately affected groups; and made recommendations about how proposals can be effectively implemented to reduce ethical problems.
