Activity Description
In 2006, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) released a series of three reports on the Future of Emergency Care in the United States Health System. To examine the progress that has been made since that time, the IOM hosted a workshop on May 21-22, 2009 to explore how the nation has moved towards the IOM’s vision of a “regionalized, coordinated, and accountable” emergency care system. One of the central recommendations contained in the IOM reports encouraged the federal government to more effectively coordinate emergency care-related activities that are widely dispersed through various federal departments and agencies. Now, three years later, structures are being put in place to address this challenge. This workshop is being convened to bring stakeholders and policymakers together to discuss which of the many challenges facing emergency care are most amenable to coordinated federal action.
Participants will include policymakers from the various federal agencies involved in emergency care, state and local officials, and stakeholders from the health care provider community. Thought leaders from a wide range of relevant disciplines will be in attendance including, nursing, EMS, specialist physicians and surgeons, public health officers, and hospital and health system administrators.
The objectives for this workshop are to foster information exchange between federal officials involved in advancing emergency care and key stakeholder groups from around the country, identify policy areas that are of great and immediate concern for emergency care stakeholders and federal policymakers, and to hold discussions with federal partners regarding the policy and programmatic areas that should be the focus of coordinated federal action.
