Activity Description

An ad hoc committee will organize a two-day public workshop to review relevant research studies that illustrate the array of methods associated with research on family structure, processes, and relationships; to identify the relative contributions of selected study methodologies; and to identify research and training opportunities to improve the quality of the knowledge base in this field that would enhance understanding of interactions between family environments and child health and development. 

• Family research studies that offer recent and significant contributions in understanding the social determinants of child health, developmental outcomes, and health disparities;
• Illustrations of quantitative and qualitative methods and approaches associated with research on the diverse structures and dynamic qualities of family environments;
• The relative contributions of selected study approaches and methodologies (including studies of marriage and family structure; life course research studies; studies of human development; methodological research involving experimental, quasi-experimental, longitudinal, observational, survey, and time-use studies; and studies of selected cultural, ethnic or immigrant populations);
• Opportunities for collaboration among federal agencies to improve the quality of research and training in this field and the application of  this knowledge base to understanding interactions among family environments and children's health outcomes.
