The IOM will organize a one-day planning meeting to review the state of research and clinical practice associated with chronic disease illnesses such as cancer, brain tumors, sickle cell disease, epilepsy, diabetes, and congenital heart disease in children. The meeting will do the following: (1) review the state of research and clinical practice associated with the identification of neurodevelopmental disease-related and treatment-related effects in children with selected chronic illnesses; (2) identify the consequences of these effects in areas such as early learning processes, academic performance, memory, information processing speed, psychomotor functioning, and executive functioning; (3) examine what is known about the domains that are affected, the scope and severity of these effects, and the extent to which such effects may be misdiagnosed or untreated; and (4) review key issues that may require further attention in conducting research on these effects and developing early and effective interventions to identify and mitigate these adverse consequences.
